Tales of Wanderlust
Two robed monks crossing the stone courtyard of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong with ornate painted woodwork, Bhutan

Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan · APR 2024

The Courtyard

from £20

Two monks cross the vast flagstone courtyard of a Bhutanese dzong, dwarfed by its painted timber galleries.

A dzong is a fortress-monastery, and its courtyard is a world in itself — whitewashed walls, intricately painted galleries in red and gold, and a central tower rising over the flagstones. Two monks crossed it in the morning quiet, robed in maroon, made small by the architecture.

The colour is the reason to keep this one as it is: the deep reds and ochres of Bhutanese woodwork are half the subject. The symmetry of the buildings and the two figures give it scale and a sense of unhurried ritual.

Ordered, devotional, and richly coloured — Himalayan Buddhism at rest.
