The Sentinels
from £20
A line of white storks standing guard along an ancient Fez wall, one to each merlon, against a hard winter-blue sky.
Storks are everywhere in Fez — nesting on minarets, gateways, and the crumbling tops of the old city walls. Here a whole row had claimed the merlons of a rampart, one bird to each block, lined up as though posted on watch.
The photograph is built on rhythm and contrast: the repeated geometry of the wall, the white-and-black birds punctuating it, the flat sand tone set against a sky turned hard blue by the winter cold. Graphic enough to read across a room, strange enough to reward a second look up close.
Wry, bold, and full of character — Morocco with a sense of humour.
