The towering Monastery (Ad Deir) facade with two donkeys resting at its base for scale, Petra, Jordan

Ad Deir at Rest

from £20

The Monastery stands 45 metres tall. You only understand the scale when you notice the two donkeys resting in the courtyard — barely visible, but absolutely essential.

Ad Deir is the largest monument in Petra. Numbers don’t convey it — 45 metres tall, carved from solid rock, hidden at the top of a mountain. What does convey it is the moment a viewer notices the two donkeys resting at the base of the columns: tiny, unhurried, ancient in their own way.

That discovery — the sudden recalibration of scale — is what this print is built around. It happens every time someone looks at it long enough. At 24” × 16”, the donkeys are easy to miss for the first few seconds, and then impossible to unsee. That’s the joke and the point.

Pairs beautifully with The Monastery (the closer, rock-framed version) for a two-print display.
