Ad Deir, Petra
The Monastery
from £20
Ad Deir seen through the boulders of the viewpoint above — the facade framed by the very rock it was carved from, after a two-hour climb almost nobody completes.
Ad Deir — the Monastery — is bigger than the Treasury, further away, and requires a brutal climb of nearly a thousand steps to reach. Most visitors stop at the first viewpoint. This was taken from higher still: a second climb, past the café and off the marked path, to where the boulders frame the building in a way no postcard has ever shown.
The out-of-focus foreground rocks compress the distance and make the Monastery appear to float — simultaneously ancient and weightless. The depth of field is a creative decision, not an accident.
A print that rewards those who look closely. The kind of image that earns its place on a wall.
